A few Upholstery Terms

If  you are not an upholsterer, there is a whole new language for you to learn. I thought I would choose 10 terms and educate you a little:

Antimacassar  is a cloth that is positioned over the arms of the chair, at the head or on the cushions. The purpose its to minimise soiling the main fabric.

Button -Tufting  This uses buttons and cord to create indentations in the fabric, which creates 'puffs' and valleys in your furniture.

Gimp: A tightly woven trim that  looks similar to ribbon. It is mainly used to conceal staples and tacks.

Nailhead trim  This is a decorative element tat is used on edges of furniture. They are either hammered in individually or a strip of trim is used.

Outline Quilting  This is a decorative technique where the fabric is quilted using the outline of the pattern on the fabric.

Railroading: Cutting fabric to avoid seams in large upholstered pieces.

Ripping Out - Procedure for stripping chairs down to the bare bones so it can be repaired or worked on.

Saddle Stitched A decorative way to sew the cover. Used more for ornamentation.

T -Shape A seat or back cushion shaped roughly like a "T" in a chair.

Welting is the round decorative trim sewn onto the seam of furniture or cushions to conceal the edge of the fabric and nails, and to give the piece a 'polished finish'.
