Lighting is Important

Motivating space at Pinkeye Design Studio

We usually talk about upholstery and the different types of fabric and how to care for them. I wanted to change tack slightly and talk about lighting.

You may have gorgeous upholstery in your office space, but if it is poorly lit, then not only will you not get to appreciate it (and the money you spent on it), but your productivity is not likely to be at it's peak.

When it comes to lighting however, there is plenty to consider. The type of lamp, the design, how it would be installed (surface mounted, suspended, recessed etc), let alone placement and colour.

The artificial light that you install, can impact the feeling within the workplace, from very stark and hospital like, or very warm and inviting. You need the perfect mix of both.

In waiting areas for your clients, a lovely upholstered couch with warm lighting such as lamps could have the desired effect of being inviting and cosy (depending on the type of business you run). In the engine room of your business installing lighting that is appropriate for computer use while being inviting will be the right mix. So using a combination of overhead lighting and lamps is likely the way to go.

It's always difficult finding the right balance between encouraging productivity and being inviting. The first step though is to make sure you know the purpose of each space and what you are trying to achieve - i.e. inviting and intimate for diners or a fast paced kitchen in the back.

Quite an uninspired office
Have you had success with your lighting in your business, how did you navigate it?
