Success Vs Failure: It's in the details.

So you've had a piece upholstered - either you've done it yourself or you've had a professional do it. Well it's not quite right and you don't think it's been a screaming success. Do you know what the problem is?
It is likely the the problem lies in the details. The devil really is in the details when it come to upholstery.  Here's some areas that may have needed some more attention:

Wrong type of fabric for piece - Was the fabric the right choice? Did you decide to use a fairly lightweight fabric when what was needed was a durable fabric that would withstand a lot of wear and tear? Just because a fabric looks good, doesn't mean that it will automatically work on your piece of furniture. This is especially true in a business setting, because you know durability and maintenance are what should be your priorities.

Wrong pattern for the furniture. - Do you choose a pattern that was way too large or too small for the piece? I wrote a little while ago about what to look for in patterned fabric. Have a read and see if you made the right choice.

Pattern match up - Is the pattern on the fabric not lining up perfectly?  This really does make the difference between something looking expensive and something looking cheap. You don't want that, especially if you have paid for someone else to do it for you.

Trim - too much, not enough? Did you like the idea of adding Trim to your piece, but for some reason it turned out looking more like a messy party, rather than a smart addition? You have to use this very judiciously to get the right result.

Now if your piece isn't a success and it was upholstered by a professional, then I'm sorry but it really wasn't a professional you used. A true professional would know all of the above, it's pretty basic stuff really. So you may want to talk to them about some compensation. However, if they tried to warn you about some of your decisions... well I guess you'll know better for next time.
