So what is a 'Contemporary Style'?

I think we all understand what antique furniture is, but what about 'contemporary'? Does it have to be this year's furniture or the latest models?

Well technically contemporary means that it's design is from 'the moment', but in reality it's more a change in direction from the 'traditional look' - where furniture has an antique feel to it, with floral print fabrics being used. You can imagine it in a swanky New York city, Upper East Side apartment like below.
Example of the 'Traditional' style.

Therefore, contemporary furniture has straight lines and a more minimalist feel about it. Fabrics on upholstery would be solid or more subtly patterned.

Contemporary furniture is about lines and angles. Everything straight - think geometry which are wrapped in neutral colours like cream, white, tan, black. Contemporary furniture is prominent in offices and businesses of all types, because it is less 'fussy', as you won't see slip covers, or skirts around the bottom of couches - they like to show off a bit of leg.

Now here's the catch, 'Modern' styling is different from 'Contemporary' styling. Modern is linked more to an era such as the mid 1950's think the Eames Lounge chair, where contemporary can be a bit more fluid.
