Furniture Trends

I'm sure over the years, you've seen trends come and go, and it's no different with furniture.

What are some of the trends that we've seen recently:

Environmentally Conscious Furniture

With the environment being top of mind in all areas, 'eco-furniture' is here to stay. This means recycled or repurposed materials, wood from sustainable forests, and chemicals that have a lesser impact on the environment.

Shrinking Furniture
With our living spaces decreasing, so is the size of our furniture. Furniture is becoming more streamlined, with items such as recliners having a smaller profile and sofa's being more sleek and less ornate.

Double Duty
Furniture needs to be able to more than just be able to sit on it. Whether it's an ottoman that allows for storage, a pull-out couch, or table-by-day- bed-by-night, furniture needs to be able to pull it's weight.

Technology
There are more furniture pieces that allow for your gadgets to charge, remotes built into sofas, and tables with space for your laptop.

Vintage is Now
Purchasing vintage furniture is probably popular because retro is cool again, there is history to each piece and Trade Me offers good deals. It comes down to personal choice as to which decade you gravitate to.

The Outdoors
A few years ago, outdoor furniture was your basic camping chair, now we are more inclined to have table and chairs, even recliners. This is in addition to our fancy BBQ's. I think this area will grow even more over the years, as we value our outdoor living.

And one that never goes out of style - Leather

Leather has always been popular and is unlikely to change. This is mainly due to leather being so durable (if cared for properly). Choosing the right leather means that your sofa will retain it's value for much longer, especially if you purchase a classic style.

So what trends do you see that will stay, or ones that you think (or hope) will go?
