Upholstery Trim

Upholstery Trim is a quick way to make a piece of furniture stand out, get it right and you can take a boring utilitarian piece of furniture and make it stand out and look fantastic. But conversely, get it wrong and you can make something look quite cheap and unappealing. Feel the pressure to get it right?

What types are there:
There are a lot of options when it comes to trim. Most people get stuck at 'fringe' but there are more options than that.

Fringe: Brush, Bullion, Tassel, feather.
There are more options than you probably thought. Two examples here are a feather and a tassel fringe. can you think of a piece that would look great with either of these?

Piping/Welting: This is either the definition that can be included between the seams - a contrast colour looks great. And welting looks similar but is used mainly to cover up nails and staples. Welting is usually single or double.

Other options: Nail heads otherwise known as upholstery tacks is a very popular trim in home DIY projects, but then there is also wood strip that might add that extra zing to your furniture.

Things to consider
When you are considering what to use remember the idea is that you want to accent, not overtake the piece. So if you are unsure and it's possible to do, take your  furniture item with you and try out a few things before committing to anything. You may feel a little odd lugging your chair around, but it will save you a lot of time and heartache in the end.

Something else to consider is who is going to be doing this task for you? Are you going to be doing it? If so, then go with something nice and easy to start off with. If you use a professional, you won't have to go through the trial and error, because they can guide you in the right direction.

So have you undertaken a successful 'trim' project? What did you use and how did it look?
