How to make your upholstered furniture look cheap.

I think we've all seen those pieces of furniture. They initially look good, but something is a bit off that makes it look more 'home made' than professional. Do you know what it is?

It's the mismatched fabric pattern.

This tropical chair looks great, the chair is a lovely style, the fabric looks inviting, but look closely at the box cushion.

Is it lined up? Does the pattern of the vines and leaves follow down the cushion front to the bottom of the chair? Now that you've seen it, can you look at anything else?

I bet this chair is expensive to buy (sorry have no details). If you are going to pay good money for an upholstered (or reupholstered piece) then you want a professional 'finished' look. Unfortunately this does look as professional as it could be.

Now lets look at this piece, it is exceptionally well done, it is finished with a lot of precision and attention to detail. Note the way the pattern was handeld on part of the front boxing - this enhances the effect of the skirt. The pattern repeat is too large to be accommodated by the boxing, so the upholsters had to use their knowledge to create this effect.

Have you purchased a piece of furniture that at first you thought looked fantastic and then you realised that it wasn't as wonderful as you initially thought? Or have I made you more aware of what to look for when you purchase an upholstered piece of furniture?

If you are a DIYer, then keep in mind that if you want your piece to look professional, then you need to make sure that your pattern lines up. Remember when you are starting out you want a professional look, if at all possible. I would suggest starting off by usine a plain fabric and maybe using a contrast piping to give it some details without too much stress.
